When you are younger, you think that adulting is owning a posh house and a car, being able to go out at whatever hour you please wearing whatever tickles your fancy.

Then you grow up and you realize that it’s more about trying to fit your bills in your salary, trying to slay on a budget, and about coming up with excuses about why you can’t go out every weekend.

Even then, there are things that every woman should learn to do for herself. Here is a look into some of them.

Walk Away From Relationships That Don't Serve Her.

The best thing about growing up has to be that you finally realize that kuvumilia is overrated. That the quality of a relationship is not determined by how long it lasts.

The real test is knowing when enough is enough and having the courage to walk away from that man you’ve been dreaming of growing old with.

Cook A Decent Meal.

Before you begin throwing stones, I am not suggesting that a woman should learn to cook so that she can feed the men in her life. Uh-uh.

A woman should learn to cook because it’s a basic life skill. Why would you want to leave your health and wellness in the hands of other people?

Saying No Without Guilt.

Girls belong to the community. When you were growing up, while your brothers were encouraged to explore away from home, you were encouraged not to stray too far. Not to forget those you leave behind.

As a result, saying no is an uphill task for the Black woman. Saying yes to all requests from planning all of your friends’ birthday surprises to being the treasurer of all chamas is something that you will need to learn.

A good place to start is to ask yourself what you are saying yes to each time you turn someone down. For instance, saying no to hosting that party is saying yes to that much-needed alone time for some self-care.

Check Your Breasts For Cancer.

Breast cancer is the most prevalent form of cancer in women in Kenya. This means that there is that much value in women learning to do a breast examination.

Looks like it’s time to get familiar with the boobs. Make sure to report any changes to your physician. How early it’s caught makes all the difference when it comes to breast cancer.

Taking Care of Your Skin.

I hate to break it to you but the freedom and the good life that adulthood offers comes with wrinkles and dry skin in tow. You need to learn to take care of your skin. The earlier you learn this, the better.

The secret isn’t in finding expensive products, it’s in finding a daily skincare routine that works.

Say What She Wants In Bed.

We worry too much about what other people will think and how we may be perceived that we forget to live. It might help to remember that whatever you do, however much of a prude you pretend to be, people will still judge. You have no control over that.

You might as well drop the act and say what you need to get your needs met. YOLO.

Negotiate For A Raise.

There are two kinds of people on earth. The kind that walks into the HR office whining about how high their bills are and how many kids they are raising, and then there is the kind that walks in their head held high and negotiates a raise based on the value of what she’s bringing to the table.

A grown woman should be trying to be the latter. Your employer doesn’t care how far from the office you live in or how many children you are paying school fees for. Tell them what you can do for them.
