Most of us dream of so many things when it comes to money. We want to make so much of it that we don’t have to think twice about it.

That said, our relationship with money is, at times, not the best. We spend more than we want, we make less than we need, we give more than we should, we save little that it cannot shelter us on rainy days and we struggle to make a proper plan that will help us seal these and more loopholes.

Is there something you can do to better your financial manners? Of course. There’s always a solution to most things, however complex. Here are a few tips that will help you to finally seal the financial goals loopholes that will work for you this year.

Personalize Your Money Goals

When most of us think about financial planning, we think about what our money will do for others and set goals around that. However, you should think about yourself and what you want your money to do for you.

Just like any other resolution you make, think through your ambitions and plans and centre your financial situation around that. Yes, you have kids, a wife and other obligations but you shouldn’t forget yourself.

Know What You Take Home

Some people tend to make their financial plans around their gross salary, if employed, instead of the net, what they actually take home. This is wrong as you will spend more than you should because you have inaccurate estimates. After that, plan yourself around that and be realistic about what you can and cannot do with the money.

Plan In Advance

We are now in January and December looks like it is so far away. We just came from a holiday so you wouldn’t expect most people to be thinking about the next one. However, you should be thinking about some of these things as early as now. What do I mean, financially?

Start saving for your December plans now. You can stash some money on a monthly basis or however, you like that’s specifically dedicated for this purpose. Guess what? Come December, you will be in a better position to spend money that doesn’t cause you any worries.

There is so much content out there nowadays that you can improve many aspects of your life without paying an expert. One of these areas is money. More often than not, you might think that you fully understand your money habits when you actually need help with them.

Even if you are well-versed, learning never hurts or stops. Pick a book, listen to a podcast, read, find someone whose tone you enjoy and pick up ideas that work for you. This is the best way to keep yourself updated and will be helpful when it comes to making decisions.

Live Within Your Means

We’ve heard this before. If you are a person who loves lavish things yet your money does not allow you to do that, this point is for you. If you earn Ksh 20,000 you have no business living in a house that goes above that. Always look for something that is affordable according to what you have.

You know that this is the one thing that lets you down. You want to do everything for everyone but unfortunately, this will not serve you well and this is where boundaries come in.

Let your kin know how much you can do for them. Set that limit and never go beyond it unless it’s an emergency situation. Don’t allow anyone to guilt-trip you. If you aren’t clear about what you are willing to spend and can’t, you will end up resentful and always playing catch up with your money.
