3 Ways To Burn Fat While You Sleep

Wouldn’t it be awesome to burn hundreds of calories each day without moving a muscle? Meaning you can stay lean while reducing the time you spend working out in the gym and still enjoy filling meals daily.

I know this sounds like a fantasy but its very possible to burn fat while you are in fantasy land. Sleep is very key and detrimental to great health. Our bodies need to get proper rest in order to build a strong immune system, keep our minds clear and help our cells to recover. 

Take Those Socks Off!

You want to be cold at night. According to a study conducted by the National Institute of Health, sleeping in a cold room helps you burn calories faster than being warm and cozy. The results revealed that people who slept in a 62- 66-degree F° room burned seven times more calories than those who slept at 75 degrees F°. It is also suggested to make it a habit to have cold showers, so that the body generates heat to maintain the temperature of the body. This forces the metabolism to increase and in turn burn more calories.

It’s A Hormone Affair

While you are dreaming of prince charming whisking you away for that much needed vacation shopping spree, your body is busy releasing and manufacturing hormones. The two main culprits are ghrelin and leptin. If we sleep the necessary hours recommended, your body will release the necessary amount of leptin, which is responsible for increasing the feeling of satiety (I’m full feeling) that prevents us from overeating. At the same time, the production of ghrelin is reduced, which is the head honcho in stimulating hunger even when we don't need to eat.

Another hormone produced while we sleep, that is essential for weight loss is melatonin. This hormone induces sleep and is produced naturally in the brain. And is very sensitive to light. (turn off that phone my friend) This hormone causes the body to produce a so-called brown fat. This is also produced when we eat chili peppers and spicy food. Brown fat (brown adipose tissue) has the ability to use regular body fat as fuel to generate heat which burns calories quickly. Other research by the Sleep Foundation points out that, for example, a person weighing about 57 kilos will burn around 38 calories per hour of sleep, that is, about 304 calories if they sleep the recommended 8 hours.

Get Those Minerals In

There is a glandule called the thyroid located on your neck right below the Adams apple. It is the source of energy for our metabolism. The thyroids’ function is to take iodine and use it to make the hormones that control how our bodies burn the calories that we consume. Our job is to help the thyroid do its job by providing what it needs. 

This means eating foods rich in iodine, zinc (we lose a lot of this through sweat) and selenium. For example, iodized salt (sea salt doesn’t score very high in iodine), algae, meat, seafood, and nuts from Brazil. Just one of these simple supplements can help us boost our metabolism by an extra 527 calories per day. Who doesn’t want that! It is also helpful to switch from regular cooking oil to MCT’s (Medium Chain Triglycerides) like coconut oil, and or Olive oil. Let’s also not forget to drink lots and lots of water throughout the day. This is so important because it boosts our metabolism from 10% to 30%.  Especially cold water, because that obligates our bodies to burn more calories, because our body has to work extra to warm the water. Keep this up by drinking at least 6 to 8 glasses of water per day.  

I hope these small tips will help you adjust a few key areas in your lifestyle, like committing to a few extra hours of sleep a night in order to see results and for you to reach your goal.
