Has it? Because I can tell you for free that it can make you lose your mind for a minute. Weuh! I would like to say that I don’t want to talk about it but let me just let the cat out of the bag.

I know that many of us have had that one scary moment where your periods are late and you now turn to a mathematician trying to calculate to see if you made a mistake. At that moment, your heart is pounding, you are breaking a sweat, you have blocked out noise from your surroundings and deep down you are uttering a prayer saying you won’t let it happen again if you happen to have your dates wrong. Now, don’t get me wrong here. Having a child and being a mom is an amazing thing and a blessing. However, at the right time and mind is what is important. It is your body and so you have the choice of when to make that step and if it is not the time, that is what contraceptives are for.

Back to my story now. It was a crazy afternoon and I got an alert from my calendar that I had not yet indicated that I was on my periods. I know you know which calendar I am talking about. Have you ever had an out of body experience? That is what I felt at that moment. Immediately my mind started running numbers. ‘The last day I was with him was on…did I take the pill or not...was I on my safe days…did I mark my calendar right?’ All that and more was running up and down my mind as I was trying to do the math and get it right.

To my shock, everything was adding up. I had taken my pills up to date, I had done everything. But the fact still remained that my periods were late. At this point I had to make an appointment with my doctor to figure out what the issue could be, because for me, being a week late was not normal. I had to figure out my next step so that I could calm down and settle down. I had a sleepless night, just worrying about the next day and what I would find out from the doctor. The day came, the appointment happened, some tests were run and finally, the moment of truth. It wasn’t what I was expecting, but it all turned out for the better.

Fast forward to 2 years later, I am a proud mother to my baby boy, who has brought so much joy into my life. My contraceptives backfired on me, still haven’t gotten to the bottom of why they did, but they did. It could happen to you too and here is what you can do

What To Do

It is important that you always check the expiration date on your contraceptives, since if they are expired, it would mean they would be of no good use. Other than that, if you take contraceptives and you happen to miss your period, here is what you need to do.

Step One - Consult your doctor. Consulting a doctor is important because the next course of action to be taken will depend on the form of contraception used.

Step Two - If it happens that you find out you are pregnant like I did, take a minute to establish how you feel, it is best to talk to someone about it because it will come as a shock. Then, take your time before you conclude anything.

Step Three - If you find out that you aren't pregnant, ask your doctor about the next step. Ask about the way forward when it comes to contraceptives and what you should do if you want to continue taking them.

What gave me strength was Sauti Sol’s song that goes “Mungu akileta mtoto, analeta sahani yake”. So far, these lyrics have proven to be true.

Life is really never that serious Sis.
