RE: March 2020. The internet is filled with the 'Don't Rush' challenge- which I hated, truthfully, and everyone baking banana bread. We all know the pandemic will be over in two months, at most.

A year later- who would’ve thought we would be in another lockdown which has obviously come with the work from home directive from the government?

Some of us who know the joys of working from home, whether self-employed or freelancing or telecommuting, also know also the joys of procrastination and the lures of laying on the couch. On the other hand, working from home tends to blur the boundaries between work and personal life- if you work too hard, you will have no personal life left.

The real challenge comes with trying to find a that balance, so here’s a few tips to stay productive while working from home.

Define Your Spaces

Separate work from home. Have a room dedicated to working. Don’t do it wherever you happen to be. Set aside some space or room to be your workspace. That way, when you enter it, you know consciously what you’re there to do: go to work.

Declutter Your Workspace

The decluttering your work space part of it is simply to remove all extra distractions, on your desk and on your computer. A tidy workspace helps keep a tidy mind, which helps make your day more productive.

Do One Thing At A Time

Simple. Set regular hours, and stick to the schedule.

Start The Day Properly.

Have a good breakfast, spend some time alone to just sit and do whatever. Don’t forget to have a good lunch as well. That will help you have an active afternoon.

Stop Multitasking

Whilst it may seem more efficient to do multiple things at once, are you really making progress with the task you are attempting to do? Or are you even doing them well?

Give Yourself Breaks

Don’t be locked in the room all the time. For every hour you work, have a 15–30-minute break. Give your mind time to digest what it’s just done, then come back. You’ll improve the quality of what you produce a hundredfold.

Set Boundaries

For you and for those around you as well. Schedule your work time and make sure the kids and spouse know that you are unavailable for playing, chores, etc. during this time. Also, don’t allow work to consume your life. Easier said than done when working from home. Make sure you set limits for the amount of time you will work.

Work Off-line As Much As Possible

To increase your productivity, disconnect your internet connection. Have scheduled times when you’re going to check your email, and only let yourself surf the web when you’ve gotten a certain amount done.

Spending all day in the comfort of your home while working can make it harder to find the motivation to get outside. Try working out at lunchtime and organizing virtual group sessions, is a way to keep up that motivation.
