We all love to smell fresh and have a signature scent that people can identify us with even from a distance; but we all know that finding the best perfume is not so easy.
With so many brands of perfumes available and thousands of fragrances to choose from, settling for the perfect scent can be tricky, but it’s not entirely impossible.
Here are a few great tips that can help you land on your best perfume, keeping in mind your budget and personal taste, of course.
Choose The Right Concentration.

Whether you are looking for a strong scent that can last for many hours or a lighter scent that typically lasts for just a few hours, there is something for you.
Perfumes are classified based on the concentration level of essential oils or perfume extract they contain.
There are five categories based on concentration namely:
- Perfume/parfum (20-30% of perfume concentrate).
- Eau de parfum (15-20% of perfume concentrate).
- Eau de toilette (5 to 15% of perfume concentrate).
- Eau de cologne (2 to 4% of perfume concentrate).
- Eau fraiche (1 to 3% of perfume concentrate).
The more concentrated perfume types last longer but are also more expensive while the lighter perfume types last for a shorter time but are less expensive.
Test The Perfume.
Testing a perfume is the best way to determine how it will smell on you and whether or not you will like the scent.
Begin by spritzing the perfume on your wrist or the back of your hand in a downward motion, two spritzes should be enough. Place your hand by your side for at least 30 seconds to allow the scent to settle on your skin. Bring your hand up and inhale once it has begun to dry.
Alternatively, if the perfume store has a tester strip, you can spray the perfume on the tester and smell it immediately to get the top notes of the fragrance. Let the tester strip rest for a few minutes then smell it again to get an idea of how the fragrance smells on the dry-down.
After giving it a sniff, think about how it smells on your skin and consider if you can see yourself wearing it every day. You can then choose whether you want to stick with the scent you have tested already or try something new.
Read Reviews.
Another great tip that will come in handy when choosing the perfect perfume is analyzing what other people who have bought the perfume think about it.
Once you have tested perfumes and selected a few potential scents, go online and check out the reviews and ratings. This will help you narrow down your selection.
Go Perfume Shopping In The Evening.

Our sense of smell is at its peak in the evening and at its lowest during the night and into the early hours of the morning. For this reason, it’s advisable to shop for your perfume late in the afternoon or evening rather than early in the day when your sense of smell is strongest.
Consider The Brand.
Another tip that you should consider when choosing a perfume is the brand. Go for a reputable brand that is known for producing high-quality fragrances.
Some of the reputable perfume brands in the market include Chanel, Dolce & Gabbana, Tom Ford, Dior, and Marc Jacobs. These brands are of course very expensive and if you are on a tight budget, you might not be able to afford them but worry not, there are other pocket-friendly perfume brands that you can wear and smell expensive like Shirley May, Chris Adams, and Rasasi perfumes, just to name a few.
